Ready to chase glassy mornings, cut through waves, and catch the day before it begins, or watch the day unfold with every stroke as you row past the lighthouse or Sandy Beach? Perhaps it's simply leaving your commute and stress behind as you row with the fading light.
This is your opportunity to learn to row and find out what you are missing out on, such as rowing out to the many beautiful destinations in and outside Cohasset Harbor.
We hope to teach you row, though can't guarantee you won't love it!
Learn to Row (LTR) includes four classes. The first lesson is on land, learning proper rowing technique on an indoor rowing machine (erg), commands, rigging boats, plus safety at the boathouse and on the water. The next three classes are in a boat on the water with three other rowers putting the practical into motion, with a coach as the coxswain.
Classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays 6am or 6:30pm, and Sundays at 9:30am. After you register, you will choose your individual dates. Attendance is important since a boat needs four (4) rowers to go .
Please reach out if you are not finding time slots that work for you. If you need to carry over dates to Session II, typically, we can make this happen. We have in the past allowed LTR rowers to fill in past their 4 classes if openings arise.
LAND TRAINING
Wear workout clothes and sneakers and bring a water bottle.
ON THE WATER
Dress in layers – It may be warmer or colder on the water than on land. Avoid loose shirts in the back due to sliding seats.
Footwear matters – Your feet will get wet and the ramp can be slippery. Wear water shoes, crocs, or old sneakers (no flip-flops).
Bring a reusable water bottle – No single-use bottles. We’re a carry-in/carry-out facility and strive to reduce waste.
Sun protection – Wear sunblock, a cap with a visor, and/or sunglasses.
Leave valuables at home – CMI is not responsible for lost items. Only leave keys in the designated spot at the boathouse.
To participate all rowers need to have accepted the CMI waiver and safety policy. This is normally done as part of the registration. If you did not, please contact us.
In addition we ask every rower to review the US Rowing Safety video. It's a staple for most rowing clubs as it covers important knowledge for on the water, on the land, weather indicators, and how to respond in an emergency. It is on the page below.
Parker Ave parking is very limited and requires a Cohasset All Facilities Sticker. Police do ticket for violations.
Sailing Club and Town Wharf parking also requires the sticker and should be reserved for sailors and fishermen.
Cohasset Lightkeepers lot is available only when there is no event. A CMI parking sign must be displayed on your dashboard each time you park there. Violators may be ticketed.
Border Street parking is open to all.
We highly encourage walking, biking, or carpooling whenever possible.
The weather is not in our control, and safety- yours and our staff's, drives our decisions. If CMI needs to cancel, due to unsafe conditions (dense fog, high wind) or a Harbor Master directive, you will be notified by text as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, these weather events are rarely predictable, and conditions can shift at the start of row, roll in during, or clear up so we can row. If you haven't heard from CMI, assume the row is on! Ergs are always available when the boathouse is open, so we can still work on technique and cardio.
We understand schedules change, sometimes last minute, but to row we need four people so we ask you give us as much advance notice as possible. You can make changes to your schedule up until 72 hours online before the date. After that you should text Frank 413-695-7369 and Laura 781-600-2100 ASAP. We will do our best to find a replacement so the other three rowers can still go on the water.
Once you've successfully completed LTR, you will be eligible to join the adult rowing season at a prorated amount where rowers create a weekly rowing schedule as a crew or join as substitute rowers filling in available seats as needed. In addition, you may have the opportunity to fill in open LTR seats.
Many LTR rowers form crews together. They chose a crew name, a captain and find a schedule that works. Example boat schedule pictured
As always, we believe that cost should never be a barrier to rowing so please do not hesitate to reach out to [email protected] and we'll find options to keep you rowing!
