Ocean rowing offers many benefits for cancer survivors, both physically and mentally. It creates a space where they can reclaim a sense of freedom and purpose. Whether you are new to rowing or a returning rower, the beauty associated with the coastal waters off Cohasset are what make rowing here a truly unique and rewarding experience.
We hope to teach you row, though can't guarantee you won't love it!
Eight (8) classes | Wednesdays 5-7pm
Our ladder-up program ensures a supportive experience for all.Our step-by-step program includes:
▪ Indoor erg training
▪ Stationary rowing in water tanks
▪ Learn-to-row orientation for technique and safety
▪ On-the-water rowing in crews of four
Eligibility: Designed for adult cancer survivors new to rowing or returning after a break.
LAND TRAINING
Wear workout clothes and sneakers and bring a water bottle.
ON THE WATER
Dress in layers – It may be warmer or colder on the water than on land. Avoid loose shirts in the back due to sliding seats.
Footwear matters – Your feet will get wet and the ramp can be slippery. Wear water shoes, crocs, or old sneakers (no flip-flops).
Bring a reusable water bottle – No single-use bottles. We’re a carry-in/carry-out facility and strive to reduce waste.
Sun protection – Wear sunblock, a cap with a visor, and/or sunglasses.
Leave valuables at home – CMI is not responsible for lost items. Only leave keys in the designated spot at the boathouse.
To participate all rowers need to have accepted the CMI waiver and safety policy. This is normally done as part of the registration. If you did not, please contact us.
In addition we ask every rower to review the US Rowing Safety video. It's a staple for most rowing clubs as it covers important knowledge for on the water, on the land, weather indicators, and how to respond in an emergency. It is on the page below.
Classes held at Duxbury Bay Maritime Center: There is a parking lot for all to use.
Classes that are held at CMI: Parker Ave parking is very limited and requires a Cohasset All Facilities Sticker. Police do ticket for violations.
Cohasset Lightkeepers lot is available only when there is no event. A CMI parking sign must be displayed on your dashboard each time you park there. Violators may be ticketed.
Border Street parking is open to all.
We highly encourage walking, biking, or carpooling whenever possible.
Indoor classes: Rain or Shine, it's on!
On-the-water classes: The weather is not in our control, and safety- yours and our staff's, drives our decisions. If CMI needs to cancel, due to unsafe conditions (dense fog, high wind) or a Harbor Master directive, you will be notified by text as soon as possible.
Unfortunately, these weather events are rarely predictable, and conditions can shift at the start of row, roll in during, or clear up so we can row. If you haven't heard from CMI, assume the row is on! Ergs are always available when the boathouse is open, so we can still work on technique and cardio.
We understand schedules change, sometimes last minute, but to row we need four people so we ask you give us as much advance notice as possible. You can make changes to your schedule up until 72 hours online before the date. After that you should text Frank 413-695-7369 and Laura 781-600-2100 ASAP. We will do our best to find a replacement so the other three rowers can still go on the water.
Once you've successfully completed the program, you will be eligible to join the adult rowing season at a prorated amount where rowers create a weekly rowing schedule as a crew or join as substitute rowers filling in available seats as needed. In addition, you may have the opportunity to fill in open Learn To Row seats.
As always, we believe that cost should never be a barrier to rowing so please do not hesitate to reach out to [email protected] and we'll find options to keep you rowing!
